A number of students at Maseno University are likely to miss out on the graduation list that is to be released later on Wednesday or anytime in the course of the week.

The students, most of who have not received their full fourth year marks, are worried the list might leave them out sighting slow delivery of services by the staff and the rush to handle a lot of things within a short period of time by those in authority.

According to the notice released by the university’s administration and placed on the university website a week ago, the graduation list is to be released on Wednesday and as things stand most of the students have various missing marks on their transcripts.

Things were also made more complicated for the students due to suspension of the supplementary exam that was to be administered between October 15 and 16 due to the indefinite closure of the institution.

Students have been travelling from home or their work places often in a quest to ensure their marks are intact before the list is out but as things stand some will have to wait longer for their marks to be retrieved.

Mr Jacob Omond, who is expected to graduate with a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, has visited the institution three times following up his marks for computer and industrial attachment.

“I have come here three times looking for the same things without success. I spent money on fare to and from Homabay and the worst part of it is that I am likely to miss on the list because the marks are not still there,” he laments.

Compilation of the marks has become complicated partly due to the double intake program as the number of students expecting to graduate is very big. This year alone Maseno University is expected to graduate over 6,000 students with degrees, diplomas or certificates.

According to a member of staff who did not want his name mentioned, they are finding it hard to compile everything due to a short time limit and a large number of students.

“In a normal university calendar, the process of graduation starts in April and ends in November or December. This time things are a little bit tougher because the process started in mid August and is expected to end in December. We also have a large number of students this academic year,” he said.

The double intake program which was initiated in 2012 has seen the number of students increase at Maseno University and other universities around the country.

Last year Maseno University graduated around 3,000 students. This year the number is expected to double.
