Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has appointed Prof Julius Omondi Nyabundi as the Vice Chancellor for Maseno University.

Prof Nyabundi who becomes the third VC for the institution holds a PhD in agronomy from the University of California and is a full professor of horticulture with a wealth of administrative and academic experience.

The new VC is expected to commence duties in February 2016.

Currently, Prof Joseph Sarima Chacha, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Partnerships Research and Innovations is still holding the post on and acting capacity.

Nyabundi rose through the ranks in various academic and administrative positions in Maseno University to become acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, administrative and finance from 2012-2014.

He was thereafter appointed Principal Muranga University College where he is currently serving.

He had previously served as the managing director, Chemilil Sugar Company between 2007 and 2012.

He is a renowned scholar who has published widely in refereed journals and has presented papers in local and international conferences, part of the notice distributed on various university notice boards read.

Prior to his appointment, Prof Nyabundi was seen at the university on Monday morning in what was termed as a familiarisation visit by the university’s public relations officer Jaspher Otieno.

Maseno University has been operating without a VC since March this year after the former VC Prof Dominic Makawit was given a compulsory leave.

The incumbent Makawit was expected to resume duties last month but he was given an annual leave. His first term was to end on February 2016.

Currently, Prof Joseph Sarima Chacha, the deputy VC in charge of partnerships research and innovations is holding the post in an acting capacity.
